10 things to see and do in San Francisco!

10 things to see and do in San Francisco!

Hey there!

I can’t even believe that it’s soon gonna be two years since I have lived in California! If you want to know a little bit more about it, and you haven’t read the last post, check it here! I can honestly say, if I had to mention one city (not place!) which I loved the most, it would be SAN FRANCISCO. This city is completely different than the rest of California. At least I think so. You can still feel the spirit of hippies or the beat generation. And while the image of California is usually sun, warm weather and beaches, San Francisco is hilly, windy and.. Just different. But beautiful.

Let me show you 10 places and things you (in my opinion) can’t miss while you are in the city.

Ahojte!

Ak o tom chcete vedieť trochu viac a nečítali ste minulý príspevok, kuk sem! V uliciach stále cítite pozostatky bítnikov a hippies.

10 THINGS TO SEE AND DO IN SAN FRANCISCO

Golden Gate bridge at sunrise
Golden Gate bridge at sunrise

1. GOLDEN GATE BRIDGE (at sunrise).

Of course, what else? This might be the most iconic bridge in the whole world and, let me tell you, it definitely is the most beautiful one I have ever seen. We managed to get there before sunrise (and it was cold and windy as hell!), and it offered amazing view on the still sleeping, but slowly awakening San Francisco. The view should be even better from the other side, which I did not get the chance to see, unfortunately. Oh well, at least I have the reason to go back!

2. PIER 39

Another iconic and must see spot. The place, where dozens of sea lions play and tan on the Californian sun. It also offers great views of USS Pampanito (the submarine), SS Jeremiah O’Brian (the huge ship on the picture) or Golden Gate. Which is usually in the mist, as here. Haha.

3. Walk in the FISHERMAN’S WHARF

Pier 39 can be found here. As well as the remains of the WWII. As well as many many more. Fisherman’s Wharf is a popular place to just walk between the piers, admire the historical cable cars or grab food at many of the seafood or other places. Speaking of food, make sure to visit the…

Fisherman’s Wharf je domovom Pier 39. Tiež tu nájdete mnoho pozostatkov druhej svetovej vojny. A je veľmi populárnym miestom na prechádzky pomedzi móla, môžete pozorovať historické električky alebo si dať rôzny seafood a iné jedlo. Keď už hovoríme o jedle, určite nevynechajte…

4. BOUDIN’S

Boudin’s or Boudin Bakery is the bakery located in Fisherman’s Wharf famous for its sourdough bread. You can buy different kinds of bread, pastry and you can get one of their famous soups! In the bread! And coming from Eastern Europe, this was something I really did appreciate! Yummy!

V chlebe.

5. Ride the historical Cable Car

Probably the most famous ones are Powell-Hyde and the Powell-Mason lines. The ticket costs 7$ and it will take you from the Fisherman’s Wharf to Union Square or vice versa. You can also get on at any of the stops on the way! It’s definitely a nice way to rest your feet after walking in the wharf.

6. LOMBARD STREET

I am pretty sure you have already heard about this street. It is known to be the most crooked street in the world. It is also pretty steep for pedestrians, walking down and up on both sides.

7. Take a break at UNION SQUARE

Surrounded by hundreds of shops, Union square is a popular place to sit down and chill. And watch all the people shopping, eating or just walking by. In 2009, on each of the 4 corners, these beautiful hearts were installed. All of them are different, this one says “hello” in many languages!

8. See the PAINTED LADIES

Climb Alamo Hill (okay, maybe just take a bus, it’s pretty steep) and visit Alamo Square Park. It not only offers amazing views of the city, it is also the home of Painted Ladies, these lovely colorful houses. Painted Ladies is a term for Victorian or Edwardian houses painted in at least three colors and probably the most famous example is right here!

9. Take a trip to MUIR WOODS

Muir Woods National Monument is just 12 miles from San Francisco and it’s a great half-day trip. You will get to see these giant redwoods and you can take many trails, depending on your physical condition. It’s a quiet place, just you and nature. And many tourists.

Uvidíte tieto obrovské stromy a môžete si vybrať z rôznych túr, podľa Vašej fyzickej kondície. Je to veľmi pokojné miestečko v srdci prírody 🙂

10. Take a ferry back to San Francisco

On the way back from Muir Woods, you can take the bus to Sausalito and from there, choose the ferry. It will offer unique views of Golden Gate Bridge and the downtown. And if you are considering to take some kind of cruise to see Golden Gate, just take this ferry, it’s much cheaper. Tickets are around 12$.

Downtown San Francisco, 10 things to see and do in San Francisco
Downtown San Francisco

Make sure to leave a comment if you have any other suggestions on what to see in San Fran! I have unfortunately not been able to see Alcatraz or other places, so I would be very happy for some inspiration.

I hope you are having a great day, see you soon!

My life in California!

My life in California!

It’s all fun and games living in Denmark now (okay, maybe not really), but I would never be here if it wasn’t my study abroad semester in California! So let me tell you a little bit about it!

Before my study abroad semester

Year before my plane took off – direction Los Angeles, I have not been in very pleasant state of mind. And I really felt the need to run from it. Preferably, as far as possible. As I thought I didn’t have good enough grades to be accepted for the Erasmus program, and also because all the partner universities were quite boring, I chose the option to find the school myself. The main condition was either none, or low tuition fees. So UK, Australia, Canada and most of American universities were out of the game. It took a long time to browse all the websites and forums etc., but suddenly… Good university with not that high tuition in California? Only few miles from LA? Yes please!!

I gathered all the documents and couple of months later I was accepted! My school back in Prague gave me the same scholarship I would have gotten for any of the Erasmus universities, so that was at least something.

I have had many moments when I was doubting my decision. What if I won’t like it there, what if I won’t find any friends, what if the English will be too difficult for me to study, what if… Well, let me tell you, it was the best time of my life.

Takže Británia, Austrália, Kanada a väčšina amerických škôl boli mimo hru. Zozbierala som všetky potrebné dokumenty a o niekoľko mesiacov neskôr som bola prijatá! Moja univerzita v Prahe mi poskytla rovnaké štipendium, aké by som dostala v prípade Erasmu, takže aspoň niečo.

Počas toho dlhého obdobia, s blížiacim sa dátumom odletu, som veľakrát zvažovala, či vlastne poletím. Čo ak sa mi to tam nebude páčiť, čo ak si s nikým nebudem rozumieť, čo ak nebudem vedieť študovať v angličtine, čo ak… No, povedzme si rovno, nakoniec to bol najlepší polrok môjho života.

Life in California!

I feel like I have been the luckiest girl here. We managed to get lovely 2-bedroom apartment with the hot tub right behind it! Oh my, we’ve spent some of the best evenings just talking in those bubbles! And speaking of “we”, I could not have been more lucky with my roommates! We have had so much fun, traveled so much together, been to so many parties, laughed and cried together! We still keep in touch and I believe, we will be friends for a long long time.

I wish you could all experience the campuses in America, because it is something we don’t really have here in Europe. We had a huge glass pyramid on campus at California State University, Long Beach, where we used to go see the basketball matches! The school was not too hard, not easy either, but we’ve always had time for some fun. And if it got hard, we spent the best times in the school library, because it was THE PLACE to study and talk at the same time! The weather was amazing for most of the time, except of some hurricane or flood alerts, haha. But the feeling of laying at the beach in October, or sitting in the hot tub in December? The best!

Since the beginning, we have had luck on people we met. And I am so happy to have met so many great Danes, Germans, Americans or Brazilians, that I would never have the chance to meet back home. With these people we’ve attended so many crazy parties, been to a frat party, experienced Halloween or Thanksgiving.. Gosh, I feel so sentimental writing this! I honestly miss California every single day. The feeling of being free, breathing the ocean air, eating delicious food and not having (almost) any responsibilities.

One of the biggest gamechangers, if not the biggest one, was meeting my Viking. The one I live with now. I don’t know, we just connected so well! And I was trying to fight this soo hard, I was so sure it just cannot have any future when we come out of that bubble, but it did. And now I am here, lost in Denmark.

Priala by som Vám všetkým, aby ste si mohli zažiť atmosféru amerických kampusov, keďže my niečo také v Európe nemáme. Na tom našom v California State University, Long Beach, bola obrovská sklenená pyramída, kde sme chodili na basketbalové zápasy.

After California

When I got back home, I didn’t understand what I was doing there. Everything was just so boring and so sad! Every single day I wished, I would wake up back in Long Beach, but that never happened again. Eventually, I understood that this is the reality now. I started dating my Viking and soon felt happy again. I met up with my US girls twice and with some other people as well, we’ve done some Skype calls (which we should do soon again, girls!), where we always got so nostalgic. The memories I have will be here forever and I will never forget it! Why would I, it was the happiest time of my life!

Prečo by nie, keď to bolo najšťastnejšie obdobie môjho života?

So I am telling you, go. Take the chance, if you have it, and spend one or two semesters somewhere else, because it’s totally worth it. It will be the time of your life, because you will meet so many amazing people, you will have so many new experiences! You only live your life once, so take the chance!
